Some suggestions for things to do and places to visit in and around Auckland:
  • Auckland Museum: excellent Maori and Pacific collections; Maori cultural performance. (15-20 minutes’ walk from the conference venue.)
  • Ferry trips from downtown Auckland to Waiheke Island (approx. 35 minutes one way), to Rangitoto Island (approx. 25 minutes one way), to Devonport (12 minutes one way). (Check for “Fullers ferries Auckland” in Google.)
  • Waitakere Ranges and West Coast (30-45 minutes by car from downtown).
  • Winery tours (check for “winery tours Auckland” and ‘winery tours Waiheke” in Google).
  • Auckland University Library: an excellent New Zealand and Pacific Collection.
  • You can use the gym facilities in the University Recreation Centre, two minutes’ walk from the conference venue. (No swimming pool.) Cost per visit: $15 (regular) and $10 (student).

Note to book shoppers (from Ross Clark):
Don’t expect to find large numbers of books on Oceanic linguistics for sale anywhere in Auckland. But for broader Pacific interests, within walking distance of the conference venue are:
  • University Bookshop Auckland (in the Kate Edgar complex on campus) which has books on the Oceanic languages taught here (Maori, Tongan, Samoan, Cook Is Maori).
  • Parsons Bookshop (Wellesley St, opposite the Central Library) devotes its back room to NZ & Pacific books. “Pacific” books (and books on Maori language) are in the NW corner.
  • A short walk away in Lorne St is Jason Books, an attractive second hand shop.
All of these will be open on Monday 4 January.
If you’re more mobile, worthwhile places are Hard to Find in Onehunga; Dominion Books in Herne Bay; and the Devonport Vintage Bookshop (Baxter & Mansfield)
