Prof. Ing. Claudio MODENA

Prof. C. Modena is a Full Professor of Structural
Engineering at the University of Padua for “Structural
Problems of Monumental Historical Heritage” in
Architectural and Building Engineering and is Director of
the Master Course in “Structural Restoration of Historic
Monuments and Buildings”.
He has particular interest in historical and monumental
masonry structures, strengthening/retrofitting in seismic areas, retrofitting of metal and
masonry arch bridges, and safety evaluations. He has several years experience of
research work within the programmes of the EU with responsibilities for the UNIPD
Research Unit as well as responsibilities for the University of Padua Research Unit
projects, funded and co-funded by the Ministry of Education, University and Research
(MIUR ex MURST), the National Research Council (CNR), and the National Group for
Earthquake Defence (CNR-GNDT).
Prof. Modena combines research and technical consulting. Most of his consulting activity is
in the field of restoration and conservation of historic masonry structures.
He is a member of several technical and scientific EUROCODE committees and is currently
a member of the European Association of Earthquake Engineering (EAEE); past co-
chairman and honorary member of ISCARSAH (International Scientific Committee for
Analysis and Restoration of Structures of Architectural Heritage) which is sub-committee
of ICOMOS; the High Risks Committee - Seismic Risk Sector of the Italian national Civil
Protection Agency; and of the special committee established by the Ministry of
Infrastructures and Public Works for re-drafting the national codes system related to
structural safety of both new and existing structures.
