There is increasing pressure, and often from students, to take up the challenge of being an environmentally friendly school.  Heidi Mardon introduces her organisation’s approach to assisting schools to meet the challenge.

Staffing Reviews – Workshop 2 - Presentation here

Is the staff in your area of responsibility doing the jobs needed. Are you achieving the results you want. This could mean you need to consider reviewing the staffing to match the needs of the school. This workshop will give you ideas on how to decide on whether there is a need to review, how to identify the required outcome of a review and what criteria need to be set in place to achieve any required change.  Course facilitator will be provided by the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT).

Insurance - Workshop 3
Marsh Insurance will give us their ideas on what you need to be sure your school has a least reasonable coverage & what you need to be sure you do to mitigate claims, who to consult and how.

Critical Thinking - Workshop 4 - Presentation here
A workshop to develop the thinking skills to evaluate the ever changing challenges of the EO. More of an advanced or big picture look at what makes your job tick and what options are available to make changes. There is an every growing need to position schools to take advantage of new directions and we are often bogged down in the day to day jobs. This is an opportunity to think outside the square and it is envisaged that people will leave this workshop with the motivation to think deeper about what schools are there for and what we as EOs can do to facilitate student achievement.  Course facilitator will be provided by the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT)

International Accounting Standards – Workshop 1
Here’s an opportunity to make sure you are fully up-to-date with the new financial requirements. The Ministry’s Christine Routledge presents the new models for 2007 reporting, highlighting the main changes.

How well do you do with your staff, do you set the standard? This workshop will cover effective but manageable processes on how to set performance standards, keeping the job level in perspective, what types of format could be used etc. It is expected that attendees will leave this workshop with ideas on the beginnings of a system they can use in their workplace.  Course facilitator will be provided by the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT)

Negotiating Skills – Workshop 3  - Presentation here
Do you negotiate well, are you earning as much as comparable level staff in your school, does the local supplier always seem to be charging you more than you feel he should. Many of us do not negotiate well and some help would be welcome. This two-part workshop will give you a practical head-start on how to make systems work in your office. Whether you’re redesigning or making a fresh start, Michelle Rendall offers her expertise to help you set up and maintain practical systems to achieve excellent outcomes.


Are the events in your life leaving you feeling energized or helpless? –  Workshop 5
Learn how to be mentally tough.  According to Seligman in his book Learned Optimism, “life inflicts the same setbacks and tragedies on the optimist as on the pessimist, but the optimist weathers them better”.  Let Pat Armitstead help you examine the degree of your positive or negative perception, and select a range of strategies to help develop mental toughness or good mental hygiene.

Fundraising/Marketing – Workshop 1  - Presentation here
Developing policy to maximise opportunities in the market place. Fundraising is often subject to a piecemeal approach in schools and Executive Officers need to have some tools to gather in the reins so that income is maximised and “sponsors” well treated.
This is mostly likely to be useful for EOs who have relatively recently come to the job.  Course facilitator will be provided by the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT)

Excel Spreadsheets – Workshop 2
Much of the EOs work revolves around figures and an ideal way to manipulate those is by way of a spreadsheet. This workshop will enlighten attendants on such things as modelling, links between files, graphing/charting, logic formula, annuities etc. The stage or level will depend on delegate skill level and will need to be discussed with the tutor at the time.  Course facilitator will be provided by the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT)

Governance – Workshop 3
What is the connection between the Board the staff, the students. Do you know what decisions are the responsibilities of the Board or the Principal or you or how those decisions affect your relationship with those people? Learn the difference between governance & management and what that means to your relationship with the Principal.  Course facilitator will be provided by the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT)

Warren Johnstone, a partner at BDO Spicer in Christchurch and lecturer in fraud at Canterbury University, is an expert in fraud and how to detect it.  His experience of auditing over 250 schools in the last decade will be invaluable as he gives examples of frauds at schools, together with handy hints for prevention

Crystal-ball gazing: It’s not what you do – it’s who you are! – Workshop 2
You’ve been EO-ing for years; you’re nearing burn-out; here’s your opportunity to sit back, contemplate your navel (or your crystal-ball), and come up with some lateral thoughts with which to meet the future.   Sheree Honeyfield-Smith offers some tools and techniques to assist this process. She will facilitate your capacity for self-exploration (naval-gazing) so that you may see more clearly into your own “crystal-ball” (get clear about your options and preferences).

Brian Mitchell, the Ministry’s Implementation Manager, based in Wellington, hosts a session on recent happenings and what’s in the pipeline – a must for all delegates with property management responsibilities.
