Local Organising Committee

Our LOC is a diverse team of academic and non-academic personnel with a broad range of skills and experience in successful conference organisation. We have representatives from the University of Canterbury (conference underwriter), the Australia and New Zealand Geomorphology Group (IAG membership proxy), ChristchurchNZ (local economic development agency), and a professional conference organiser.


Prof. Ian Fuller, Massey University

Discipline: Fluvial Geomorphology

Conference hosting experience: Convener of ANZGG 2017 conference, 6th International Palaeofloods Conference, Jan 2020, Co-convenor 11th River, Coastal & Estuarine Morphodynamics Conference 2019, Rivers Group Annual Conference 2022

Key Roles: Overall symposia/session coordination and design; Conference formalities and introductions; Co-leader of pre-and post-conference fieldtrips.


Dr. Sam McColl, GNS Science (and ANZGG Executive Member & GSNZ Vice-President)

Discipline: Hillslope geomorphology and landslide hazards (Mid-career Researcher)

Conference hosting experience: Convener of ANZGG 2017 conference; co-convener of 2014 & 2021 GSNZ conferences.

Key Roles: Conference sponsorship procurement; promotion and social media; Co-ordinator of social activities; Co-leader of post-conference fieldtrip & mid-conference fieldtrip.


Dr Sarah McSweeney, University of Canterbury

Discipline: Coastal Geomorphology (Early Career Researcher)

Conference hosting experience: Co-host of the 'Inaugural international workshop on intermittent estuaries in a changing climate Conference’ June 2021, online. Assistance with the 18th Australian and New Zealand geomorphology Group (ANZGG) conference February 2019.

Key Roles: Coordinator of student prize judging and awards; coordinator of Young Geomorphologist conference activities; Co-leader of mid-conference fieldtrip.


Prof. James Shulmeister, University of Canterbury (UC), Head of School of Earth and Environment

Discipline: Paleoclimatology and Glacial and Aeolian Geomorphology

Conference hosting experience: Extensive experience over many years. On organising committee for Institute of Australian Geographers (IAG) 2017; Co-organiser of 16th Biennial Australia New Zealand Geomorphology Group Conference at Mt Tamborine 2014; Previously involved in oragnisation of Australasian Quaternary Association Conference and many international workshops.

Key Roles: Key liaison with financial underwriter (University of Canterbury, UC); Facilitator of mid-conference fieldtrip leaders; leader of post-conference fieldtrip. Conference abstracts.


Prof. James Brasington, Waterways Centre for Freshwater Management (UC)

Prof. Wayne Stephenson, University of Otago

Peter Almond, Lincoln University

Conference hosting experience: Peter has contributed to conference organisation and designed and led field trips for the INQUA (International Union of Quaternary Research) IPA (International Permafrost Association), AQUA (Australasian Quaternary Association), NZSSS (New Zealand Soil Science Society) and GSNZ (Geoscience New Zealand). His interests lie in soils, geomorphology, and Quaternary Geology.
